What Does UGR Measure?
UGR stands for Unified Glare Rating. It is a method used to estimate discomfort glare within an indoor lighting installation. Lower values generally indicate less perceived glare, while higher values suggest that bright luminaires may cause visual discomfort.
UGR is not determined by the fixture alone. Room dimensions, wall and ceiling reflectance, mounting height, viewing direction, fixture spacing, and background brightness all affect the final result.
What Is Considered a Low UGR Value?
A UGR value below 19 is commonly specified for offices, classrooms, and computer-based work areas. Spaces with less demanding visual tasks may accept higher values, while precision work may require tighter glare control.
A fixture described as UGR<19 should still be evaluated within the actual room layout. Photometric files and lighting calculations are more reliable than a single label when confirming performance for a commercial installation.
How Do Low UGR Fixtures Reduce Glare?
Optical design plays the main role. Micro-prismatic diffusers, deep reflectors, recessed light sources, anti-glare lenses, controlled beam angles, and lower surface brightness can all reduce direct glare.
Fixture placement is equally important. Even a well-designed panel light may feel uncomfortable when installed directly within a user’s normal line of sight. Proper spacing and mounting height help distribute light more evenly.
How Does UGR Affect Product Selection?
Low UGR lighting should not be selected without considering lumen output, efficacy, CRI, color temperature, flicker, and uniformity. Excessive glare may result from using fixtures that are too bright, too concentrated, or poorly positioned.
