How Does TRIAC Dimming Work?
TRIAC stands for Triode for Alternating Current. Instead of supplying a complete sine wave, the dimmer switches on during each AC cycle and allows only part of the waveform to pass.
Changing the point at which the current begins to flow changes the power delivered to the LED driver. The driver then converts this phase-cut input into the controlled current required by the LED module.
What Are Leading-Edge and Trailing-Edge Dimming?
Leading-edge dimmers cut the beginning of each AC cycle. They were originally developed for incandescent and magnetic loads and remain common in existing buildings.
Trailing-edge dimmers cut the end of the waveform. They often provide smoother and quieter operation with electronic LED drivers, although compatibility still depends on the driver design.
A fixture described as TRIAC dimmable may support one or both methods. The approved dimmer list should be reviewed before installation.
Why Can Compatibility Problems Occur?
LED loads consume less power than traditional lamps. Some older dimmers require a minimum load to operate correctly, which may cause flashing, unstable low-level output, delayed start-up, or failure to switch off completely.
Driver design also affects performance. Two fixtures with the same wattage may behave differently when connected to the same dimmer.

Large commercial systems requiring centralized control, zoning, scheduling, or building automation may use 0–10V, DALI, or other control protocols instead.
What Should Be Tested Before Production?
Testing should use the intended driver, dimmer model, input voltage, and fixture quantity. Performance must be checked at full output, intermediate levels, and the lowest setting.
Start-up, switch-off, audible noise, visible flicker, camera banding, and operation after warm-up should also be reviewed. Testing only one fixture may not represent a complete circuit.
How Can Stable Dimming Be Achieved?
Stable TRIAC dimming depends on a matched driver and dimmer, correct circuit loading, secure wiring, and controlled production components. Recording approved combinations helps maintain consistent performance across samples, bulk orders, and later replacement shipments.
