What Causes LED Flicker When Dimming?

Dimming can expose electrical problems that remain hidden when an LED fixture operates at full brightness. Flicker usually appears when the dimmer, driver, input voltage, load level, or control method does not work as a stable system. The lamp may flash, pulse, make noise, or suddenly switch off near the lowest setting.

Why Does Dimmer Compatibility Matter?

Traditional dimmers were originally designed for incandescent loads. LED drivers use electronic circuits and may not respond correctly designed for incandescent loads. LED drivers use electronic circuits and may not respond correctly to the same waveform.

A dimmer may be described as LED-compatible, but that does not guarantee stable operation with every driver. Compatibility should be checked using the exact fixture quantity, wiring layout, and control model planned for installation.

Why Does Flicker Increase at Low Brightness?

LED drivers need a minimum level of electrical input to remain stable. When the dimmer reduces power below that operating range, the driver may repeatedly start and stop.

This can cause visible flashing, brightness jumps, or a lamp that cannot remain on at the lowest setting. The stated dimming range should therefore be tested rather than assumed.

Can the LED Driver Cause the Problem?

The driver converts incoming power into controlled current for the LED module. Its circuit design, component quality, and dimming protocol strongly affect performance.

TRIAC, 0–10V, DALI, and PWM systems require different driver designs. Mixing a fixture with the wrong control method may produce flicker even when both components work correctly on their own.

Do Wiring and Load Size Affect Dimming?

Loose terminals, long cable runs, shared circuits, poor grounding, and voltage fluctuations can disturb dimming performance. Multiple fixtures connected to one dimmer may also behave differently from a single sample.

Testing should include the minimum and maximum fixture quantity expected on each circuit. Drivers should be checked after warm-up because performance may change with temperature.

A complete evaluation should cover:

  • Full output and several dimming levels
  • Lowest stable brightness
  • Start-up at a low setting
  • Smoothness across the dimming range
  • Driver noise
  • Visible flicker and camera banding
  • Performance with the intended dimmer
  • Multiple fixtures on one circuit

How Can Dimming Flicker Be Reduced?

Use a matched dimmer and driver, maintain the recommended load range, and verify the control wiring. Samples should use the same driver, LED board, housing, and dimmer planned for mass production.

Documented compatibility testing helps prevent site complaints, unstable low-level output, unexpected shutdown, and differences between approved samples and finished orders.
